Spring Arts Academy Semester

3rd-6th Grade: Karamu Sankofa Dance Class

with DIJON KIRKLAND

Calendar Mar 1, 2021 at 4:15 pm, runs for 8 weeks

Karamu Arts Sankofa Dance technique fuses Jazz, African and Modern dance styles. Through the study of movement throughout the African Diaspora and pioneers of dance, this course trains you in both history, social relevance and technique. Students meet twice a week diving deep into one specific dance style and highlighting the fusion of others. 

Mondays 4:15p - 5:00p

Saturdays 1:00p - 1:45p

Ongoing enrollment throughout the year will provide foundational understanding in multiple dance forms and prepare youth for Level II Sankofa Dance classes when they enter 7th grade.

Adult Sankofa Dance

Karamu Arts Sankofa Dance technique fuses Jazz, African and Modern dance styles. Through the study of movement throughout the African Diaspora and pioneers of dance, this course trains you in both history, social relevance and technique. 

Level II Sankofa Voices

$100

with REGINALD BOWENS

Calendar Mar 2, 2021 at 6:15 pm, runs for 8 weeks

Karamu Arts Sankofa Voices explores African American Spirituals, Jazz, African Diaspora Music and Acapella fundamentals. Through the study of vocal music throughout the African Diaspora and pioneers of music, this course trains you in history, social relevance and technique. Each session dives deep into one specific vocal style and highlights the fusion of others. Ongoing enrollment will provide foundational understanding in multiple vocal music genres. 

This class meets once a week and requires out of class reading, writing and rehearsal in preparation of every class.

Level I is for students with little to no previous vocal experience. Level II is for students who have at least 3 years' experience of vocal training.

with DARNELL WEAVER

Calendar Mar 3, 2021 at 5:30 pm, runs for 8 weeks

Karamu Sankofa Acting: A select playwright of the African Diaspora will be explored with analysis and technique. Karamu Arts Academy Sankofa Acting approach to theatre requires deep understanding of historical and social justice connections of work and how we can look at art and the past to move forward. Drawing historical and social connections to the past and present is the building blocks of believable characters and well-rounded performance. 

This class meets once a week and requires out of class reading and studying in preparation of every class. 

Level I is for students with little to no previous theatre experience. Level II is for students who have at least 3 years experience.

3rd-6th Grade: Karamu Sankofa Acting Class

with DARNELL WEAVER

Calendar Mar 4, 2021 at 5 pm, runs for 8 weeks

Karamu Arts Academy Sankofa Acting technique involves an understanding on the history, social relevance and embodiment of provided scenes, monologues and poetry. Students meet twice a week training their voice, body and mind to approach theatre consciously, advocating for themselves and characters. Regardless of future theatre career goals or not, this course builds character and empathy towards others and students of all backgrounds are welcomed. 

Thursdays 5:00p - 5:45p

Saturdays 2:00p - 2:45p

Ongoing enrollment throughout the year will prepare youth for Level II Sankofa Acting classes when they enter 7th grade.
