Karamu Arts Level I Artists: Sankofa Dance

CLASSES WILL BE HELD IN-PERSON AT KARAMU HOUSE

Karamu Arts Sankofa Dance technique infuses Jazz, African and Modern dance. Through the study of movement throughout the African Diaspora and pioneers of dance, this course trains you in both history, social relevance and technique. Each session dives deep into one specific dance style and highlights the fusion of others. Ongoing enrollment will provide foundational understanding in multiple dance forms. 

This class meets twice a week and requires out of class reading, writing and rehearsal in preparation of every class. 

Level I is for students with little to no previous dance experience. Level II is for students who have at least 3 years' experience of dance training. 

Dates: Saturdays September 17th - November 19th 

Time: 12:30p-11:30p | 90 min

AND Dates: Thursdays

Time: 4:15p-5:45p | 75 min

In-Person: Karamu House 2355 East 89th Street, Cleveland, OH 44106

Capacity: 25

Required Materials: Materials will be provided

Tuition and Fees: $25 annual Registration Fee + $300  Tuition

Covid Protocol: Masks are required in addition to social distancing.

Culmination: Fall 2022 sessions culminates in private recital. Spring 2023 session will culminate in full production with all classes integrated together.

Young Artists Sankofa Dance: Developing artists ages 8-10 years old will learn the fundamentals of dance with understanding of the influence from the African Diaspora.

Dates: Saturday September 17th - November 19th

Time: 12:30p-1:30p | 60 min

In-Person: Karamu House 2355 East 89th Street, Cleveland, OH 44106

Capacity: 25

Required Materials: All young artists must wear black and white; females black leotards with white tights and black dance shoes, males black dance pants, black dance shoes and a white t-shirt.

Tuition and Fees: $25 annual Registration Fee + $150 Tuition

Karamu Littles: Stories and Art

Calendar Feb 1, 2023 at 5 pm, runs for 12 weeks
Students ages 5-7 are invited with their parent to attend storytime at Karamu House. Every 2nd and 4th Wednesday we explore a story followed by artistic expression through drawing, puppets and movement. This is a drop-in class costing $15 with pre-registration required.

Karamu Arts Level II Artists: Sankfoa Drama

Karamu Sankofa Acting: an intensive theatre education course training youth to perform on a professional level. Drawing historical and social connections to the past and present is the building blocks of believable characters and well-rounded performance. Students explore a rotating curriculum featuring classical plays, contemporary plays, musicals and devised theatre while learning the foundation of acting schools of thought from an Afrocentric lens.

Karamu Littles: Movement: Young artists ages 5-7 year old will learn the fundamentals of movement and performance in this introductory class. Students will explore rhythm, spacing and technique culminating in a classroom recital for parents and loved ones. Timeliness is essential for all of our programming and the experience of our young artists. Students will not be premitted into a class after the class start time has commenced.

CLASSES WILL BE HELD IN-PERSON AT KARAMU HOUSE

Karamu Sankofa Acting: Begin a strong foundation in approaching threatre on a professional level. Through the exploration of theatre games, improv and history all students will learn how to channel their natural gifts to theatre. A select playwright of the African Diaspora will be explored through analysis, technique and performance.

Drawing historical and social connections to the past and present is the building blocks of believable characters and well-rounded performance. 

Level I is for students with little to no previous theatre experience. Level II is for students who have at least 3 years experience. 

Dates: Saturdays September 18th-December 11th (No Class November 27th)
